I have been an avid reader for some time, have a book in my hand no matter where I go or what I am doing. This means reading while scrunched up on the edge of a couch, in bad lighting, and in bed. The one downside to this is I spend a lot of time reading in some very uncomfortable places. Picture squished into a love seat with another person and an energetic puppy. Then a little over a month ago I was surfing the web and saw what looked like the most comfortable chair and for only ~$130. I picked it up, waited for it to arrive, put it together (a pain in the a**), and plopped it under a cheap reading lamp I had picked up as well.
The next morning I woke up at 6:00 am, made some coffee, and sat down for the first time with my favorite book, Ready Player One. Before I knew it, I was starving and the clock said 9:30! The wonderful part of it was that when I stood up, my back didn’t hurt, my eyes didn’t burn, and I felt more relaxed than when I had sat down. For a second I stood dumbfounded, most of the time reading for me entails being being mauled by my puppy when I try to use the recliner, or getting up stiff as a board from sitting on the edge of a couch, or waking up after I didn’t realize I fell asleep after that second page. I took some time to figure out what the chair was, and it turns out it was as a nursery chair. Now, I am not one for kids since they don’t seem to like me and I am not a huge fan of theirs, but I have to admit a chair for holding one? Totally different story.
I have been putting off building reading nook for years. I didn’t want to spend hundreds of dollars on a comfortable reading chair a decent light, and a side table. Yet, in the end I spent a little over $120 and now have one of the most comfortable reading nooks I could have imagined. Let me just explain some of the wonders of using a chair like this for reading. Imagine what it was designed for before we start. It’s supposed to help soothe a toddler with it’s smooth gliding motion while comforting the mom or dad who has spent every night awake for the past 6 months. Not only that, but it needs to be sturdy so it won’t collapse (imagine that lawsuit) and have high armrests to help coddle the baby. What you end up with is a sturdy, comfortable chair with high arm rests and a gliding foot rest to boot.
How does this improve your reading? Well, in reality I guess it doesn’t. It isn’t going to make you read more if you don’t want to and it isn’t going to make you read faster or more often. But, if you are like me and are planning to read every free minute anyway, then it will make that time much more enjoyable. The high armrests mean no more sore arms from holding the book to your face and the high back is nice for taking a breath and closing your eyes to enjoy the last plot twist of your favorite book. Friday night and want to have a beer while you read, kick your feet up, recline the chair and relax, it’s that easy. To complement mine I ended up throwing a small side table next to it to hold my coffee, and a cheap light behind me. The light is one of those two stage ones you can pick up for $16 at any Walmart. The area light helps to create a soothing atmosphere, and the direct light is perfect for making sure you don’t strain your eyes.
Make sure you put in warm LED bulbs instead of the white ones, unless you like reading in an operating room.
Side note: Some other wonderful side effects of this chair depending on who you are!
A. If you have a kid, you get a comfortable nursery chair out of the deal.
B. If you don’t you will find yourself retreating to it even when you don’t feel like reading (Picture a House of Cards Binge with your iPad.)
C. They actually look nice, and your significant other won’t want to throw it out after 2 weeks like that old recliner you still have from college.
This is the one I decided to go with was a Windsor Glider and Ottoman Set
Whatever you decide to do, remember that reading for many people is an escape, and it’s a healthy one to boot. If you spend a lot of time reading, then one of these chairs might make it even more enjoyable. Nothing beats a quiet morning, a cup of good coffee, a comfortable chair, and a world waiting for you to get lost in it.
